SparkAI Language Learning
SparkAI Language Learning is a free, web-based French course for English speakers that takes learners from complete beginner (A0) to mastery (C2). It combines 155 grammar lessons with 2,255 practice questions, 5,012 vocabulary flashcards scheduled by spaced repetition (FSRS), a reader with graded stories and classic French books, audio lessons, pronunciation feedback on your own voice, and an AI conversation partner. A guided path decides what to study next, so learners press one Continue button each day.
What it is, precisely
- Language: French, taught in English, for adults and teenagers aged 16 and over.
- Levels: the whole CEFR scale, from complete beginner (A0) to mastery (C2): 22 lessons at A0, 39 at A1, 28 at A2, 24 at B1, 20 at B2, 12 at C1 and 10 at C2, grouped into 40 short units.
- Platform: a web app at sparkailanguage.com. It works in any modern browser on phone, tablet or computer, and can be installed on the home screen. There is no app-store app yet.
- Price: free during the public beta, with no ads. An account (email or Google) is required so progress is saved. See pricing.
- Status: public beta since October 2026, built and run by Michael Sparks in Paris.
How it teaches
Each day the app picks the next step, so learners don't have to plan: words that are due for review, a lesson that slipped, the next lesson on the path, new words, reading and speaking, in proportions set by the time they have (15, 30 or 45 minutes a day).
- Grammar you master, not just see. Every lesson explains the rule with tables and examples, then tests it. A lesson counts as mastered only after it is answered correctly on at least three separate days; mistakes bring it back.
- Vocabulary that sticks. Flashcards use the FSRS spaced-repetition algorithm, which schedules each word just before you'd forget it, with French→English, English→French and fill-in-the-sentence cards.
- Lots of reading. Graded stories (A0–B1) and 21 public-domain French books (B1–C2) in a reader that colours unknown words; tap any word for its meaning.
- Listening and speaking. Hands-free audio lessons (listen, repeat, recall), natural French voices, pronunciation feedback from recordings of your own voice, mouth diagrams for difficult sounds, and an AI conversation partner.
- Honest progress. Levels are measured by what you've demonstrated (grammar mastered, words confirmed, listening accuracy, a level test), not by time spent.
Who it's for
People who want to actually understand French grammar and read real French, not only collect points: beginners who want a clear structured path, and intermediate learners who want to push on to B2, C1 and beyond. Learners who prefer listening can choose an audio-first mode.
