What does your English accent give away?
Read three short passages aloud. An AI coach tells you which words were hard to understand and how to say them clearly, then guesses the first language behind your accent.
Free, about three minutes, no account or email needed. AI feedback, not a score or a certificate.
- Read 3 short English passages aloud, three sentences each (about three minutes)
- An AI listens to the sound of your voice, not a transcript, and tells you which sounds to fix and how
- Then the AI's guess at the first language your accent suggests, and the one sound to work on first
- Your first test is free, no sign-up; then 2 a day with a free account. No score or level: just what to fix and how
To listen, the AI needs your recordings: each one (a few seconds) is sent to our AI provider for this feedback and the accent guess only, and SparkAI keeps neither the recording nor the guess. Your rhythm is measured on your device.
๐๏ธ The AI needs your microphone to hear you read. When you tap Start, your browser will ask for permission: tap Allow. It's only used while this check is open.
What the test listens for
ship, sheep
Short and long vowels. Said the same, sit and seat, or full and fool, become one word.
think, three
The th sound, where saying it as s, t or f turns think into sink or three into tree.
asked, old
Final consonants and endings: a dropped -ed or -d can change what you meant.
PHOtograph, hoTEL
Word stress, and small words such as of, to and can said quickly, so the important words stand out.
Understood, not "native"
The AI coach listens to the sound of your recording, not a transcript, and notes the words that were hard to understand, with a mouth or tongue instruction for each. It's instructed to treat British, American and other standard accents as equally correct, and a clear accent is not a mistake. Its notes are an AI's impression, not a measurement, so they can be wrong. Speaking rate and pauses are measured from your recording on your device. A recording that's silent, too quiet or distorted isn't judged at all.
Questions
How does the English accent test work?
You read three short English passages aloud, from easier to harder. An AI listens to each recording (the sound, not a transcript) and notes the words that were hard to understand, with what to change, and your speaking rate and pauses are measured on your device. At the end you see the AI's guess at your first language and the one sound to work on first.
Which accent of English counts as correct?
Any standard one. British, American, Australian, Irish, Indian and other accents are all correct, and the coach is told never to mark one as a mistake. Whether you say the r in car, or a tap in water, doesn't matter here. It listens for what makes words hard to understand, such as ship said like sheep or a missing ending, not for how close you sound to a native speaker.
How does it guess my first language?
From the sound of your English (vowels, consonants, stress, rhythm), never from a transcript of your words, once per recording; the page shows the guess most recordings agreed on. It's a guess for fun from a few seconds of audio, not a measurement. It can be wrong, and it says nothing about how good your English is.
Is the result a score, a level or a certificate?
None of these. The notes are an AI's impression of three short recordings, not a measurement, so the test gives no score or level. It can't prove your English to a school or an employer: for that, take a recognised exam.
What happens to my recording?
The page tells you this before you tap Start: to hear you, the AI model needs the sound, so each passage you record goes to our AI provider for the notes and the guess. SparkAI stores neither your voice nor the guess. Your speaking rate and pauses are worked out in your browser.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It's free, and your first round needs no account or email. With a free SparkAI account you can take it twice a day.
Can I learn English with SparkAI?
