Free French accent test

What does your French accent give away?

Read three short passages aloud. An AI guesses the first language behind your accent from how your French sounds, and a pronunciation coach tells you which words and sounds to fix, and how.

  • Read 3 short French passages aloud, three sentences each (about three minutes)
  • An AI listens to the sound of your voice, not a transcript, and tells you which sounds to fix and how
  • Then the AI's guess at the first language your accent suggests, and the one sound to work on first
  • Your first test is free, no sign-up; then 2 a day with a free account. No score or level: just what to fix and how

To listen, the AI needs your recordings: each one (a few seconds) is sent to our AI provider for this feedback and the accent guess only, and SparkAI keeps neither the recording nor the guess. Your rhythm is measured on your device.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ The AI needs your microphone to hear you read. When you tap Start, your browser will ask for permission: tap Allow. It's only used while this check is open.

What the test listens for

tu, vu, rue

The French u: say "ee" and round your lips. Said as "oo", tu turns into tout.

vent, vont, vin

Three nasal vowels that English doesn't have, and no n sound at the end.

frรจres, trois

The French r, made at the back of the mouth with the tongue tip down.

deux, heure, huit

Rounded front vowels and the quick u-glide: the sounds that give learners away.

Two results, kept apart

The AI coach listens to the sound of your recording, not a transcript, and gives notes on specific words, with a mouth or tongue instruction for each. It's an AI's impression, not a measurement, so it can be wrong. Rhythm and melody are measured from your recording on your device. A recording that's silent, too quiet or distorted isn't judged at all.

Questions

How does the French accent test work?

You read three short French passages aloud, three sentences each. An AI listens to each recording (the sound itself, not a transcript) and gives notes on the sounds to fix, and your rhythm is measured on your device. At the end you get the AI's guess at your accent and the one sound to work on first, with a drill for it.

How does it guess my accent?

The AI listens to how your French sounds (vowels, the r, rhythm, melody), never to a transcript of your words, and guesses which first language that accent suggests, once per recording. The page shows the guess most recordings agreed on. It's a guess for fun from a few seconds of audio, not a measurement: it can be wrong, and it says nothing about how good your French is.

Does it give me an accent score or a level?

No. A single number for pronunciation would look more precise than it is: the coach is an AI listening to a few seconds of audio, not a French teacher. You get specific notes on words and sounds instead, which you can act on.

Is my voice recorded or stored?

You agree before you start: each recording (a few seconds) is sent to our AI provider for that feedback and the accent guess, and SparkAI keeps neither the recording nor the guess. The rhythm measurements are made on your device.

Which French sounds are hardest for English speakers?

The u of tu (lips rounded, tongue forward), the three nasal vowels of vent, vont and vin, the French r made at the back of the mouth, eu as in deux and heure, and the quick u-glide of huit and depuis. The passages in this test are built around them.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It's free. Your first test needs no sign-up; to take it again, create a free account, which gives you two tests a day. The free French course has the same coach for the sentences you practise.
