How each video is levelled

Questions are in English up to A2 and in Chinese from B1. For short texts with an English meaning for every sentence, see the Chinese stories for beginners.

Questions

How are the videos levelled?

From their Chinese captions. We count how many characters a minute are spoken and what share of the characters belong to common words (the course's words up to B1, about HSK 1–4), then check each level by reading the captions.

Do I need to leave the site to watch?

No. The videos play on this page in an embedded player that loads only when you press play, with the creator's Chinese captions switched on.

Are the captions in Simplified characters?

In most videos, yes. Three videos from the same channel have their captions in Traditional characters, and their pages say so.

Which level should I start with?

Pick the level where you can follow the gist without pausing. If you're unsure, the level test will place you; otherwise go one level down, since frequent easy listening does more than the odd hard video.
