How each video is levelled

We read every video's transcript and measure what makes listening hard:

Speed Words per minute of speech. Videos for beginners run at 60–110; natural conversation at 160–200; comedy and news at well over 200.
Vocabulary The share of words among the 2,000 most common in spoken French, leaving out the video's own key words (which are listed for you).
Grammar Which tenses and structures come up regularly, from the passé composé to the subjunctive, linked to the lesson that teaches each one.
Register How much slang and informal spoken French there is.

Then we check the level by reading the whole transcript, and write the key words and questions from it.

Questions

How are the videos levelled?

From their transcripts. We measure how fast the French is spoken (words per minute), how much of the vocabulary is among the 2,000 most common words in spoken French, and which tenses and structures are used regularly, then check each video by reading the whole transcript.

Do I need to leave the site to watch?

No. Every video plays right here, with French captions on. The player only loads when you press play.

Are there subtitles?

Yes: French captions are turned on by default. Each video page also lists its key words with English, and three questions to check you understood.

Which level should I start with?

The one where you understand most of it without pausing. If you're not sure, take the free level test, or start a level lower: easy listening done often beats hard listening done once.
