A long streak, but you still can't speak French?
You're not bad at languages, and the streak wasn't wasted. Short daily exercises are great for a habit, but they leave out four things that conversation needs.
1. Recognising isn't producing
Picking the right answer from a few options, or rearranging word tiles, trains recognition. Speaking means building the sentence from nothing, fast. Fix: answer from memory, out loud. Typed answers, audio lessons that make you say the French, and conversation practice all train production.
2. The grammar was never explained
Without the rule, every new sentence is a guess, and guessing is slow. That's why speech freezes. Fix: learn the core structures properly once, like the passé composé with être or lui and leur, then practise them until they're automatic.
3. Not enough words
Conversation needs a few thousand words you can recall instantly. Fix: spaced repetition of the most frequent words, and reading, which shows you the same words again in context. How many do you know?
4. Not enough real French
Real speech is fast, linked and full of words that never appear in exercises. Your ear needs hours of it. Fix: graded stories, audio lessons, podcasts for learners, then films and news, a little every day.
A week to test the difference
- Find your real level with the streak vs real level test.
- Each day: one grammar lesson, 10 minutes of flashcards, one short story or audio lesson.
- Three times that week: a 5-minute conversation, out loud.

Questions
Why can't I speak French after years of Duolingo?
Usually because speaking was never practised much: recognising the right answer among options is a different skill from building a sentence yourself, out loud, in real time. Add speaking, listening to real French, and explained grammar, and it usually moves quickly.
How long does it take to speak French?
Simple conversations start around A2, roughly 180 hours of study from zero according to the Alliance Française's estimates. Real fluency (B2) takes about 600 hours. What you do in those hours matters as much as how many.
Is it too late to fix it?
Not at all. Your streak means you have the habit and some vocabulary. Redirect some of that daily time to speaking and real input, and the change is often noticeable within weeks.
