Indirect object pronouns – lui, leur
Je lui parle, je leur téléphone
An indirect object is a person introduced by à: je parle à Marie. It's replaced by an indirect object pronoun**.
The pronouns

Only the third person differs from the direct pronouns: lui and leur (not le, la, les).
- Je parle à Marie. → Je lui parle.I speak to her.
- Je téléphone à Paul. → Je lui téléphone.I'm calling him.
- J'écris à mes parents. → Je leur écris.I write to them.
- Il m'a donné un cadeau.He gave me a present.

Position
Same as direct pronouns: before the conjugated verb, or before the infinitive:
- Je ne lui parle plus.I don't speak to him any more.
- Je vais leur écrire.I'm going to write to them.
Leur vs leurs
The pronoun leur never takes an s: Je leur parle. The possessive adjective does: leurs enfants.
Things and places
Lui/leur are for people. For à + thing use y: Je pense à mon examen → J'y pense. See Adverbial pronoun y.
English often has no "to": I gave her the book = Je lui ai donné le livre.
