Stress pronouns – moi, toi, lui, elle…

Moi, je…; avec toi

Stress pronouns (pronoms toniques) are the forms of the personal pronouns you use when the pronoun stands on its own, not as the subject of a verb.

When to use them

1. For emphasis, alongside the subject pronoun: > Moi, je préfère la mer. = Me, I prefer the sea. > Lui, il ne sait rien. = He doesn't know anything.

2. After prepositions (avec, pour, chez, sans, de, à…): > Tu viens avec moi ? = Are you coming with me? > C'est pour toi. = It's for you. > Je rentre chez moi. = I'm going home.

3. After c'est / ce sont: > C'est moi ! = It's me! > Ce sont eux. = It's them.

4. In short answers and with aussi / non plus: > Qui veut du gâteau ? – Moi ! = Who wants cake? – Me! > J'ai faim. – Moi aussi. = I'm hungry. – Me too. > Je n'aime pas ça. – Moi non plus. = I don't like that. – Me neither.

5. In comparisons: > Il est plus grand que moi. = He's taller than me.

6. With -même (-self): > Je l'ai fait moi-même. = I did it myself.
