Beyond places, y replaces à + a thing or idea with verbs followed by à.
Verbs + à + thing
- penser à, réfléchir à, répondre à, s'intéresser à, participer à, s'habituer à, croire à, faire attention à, tenir à, jouer à
- Tu penses à ton examen ? – Oui, j'y pense.Yes, I'm thinking about it.
- Il a répondu à la lettre ? – Oui, il y a répondu.
- Tu t'intéresses à la politique ? – Non, je ne m'y intéresse pas.
- Je vais y réfléchir.I'll think about it.
People: stress pronoun or lui/leur
Y is for things. For people:
- Most verbs use lui / leur before the verb: Je réponds au prof → Je lui réponds.
- Some verbs (penser à, s'intéresser à, s'habituer à, faire attention à) use à + stress pronoun after the verb:
- Tu penses à Marie ? – Oui, je pense à elle. (not
je lui pense) - Je me suis habitué à eux.
Common expressions with y
- J'y pense !I'm thinking about it / Good idea!
- N'y pense plus.Forget about it.
- Je n'y crois pas.I don't believe it.
- Je n'y suis pour rien.It's nothing to do with me.
- J'y tiens.It means a lot to me.
