Passé composé with être
Je suis allé(e), elle est partie
About fifteen common verbs form the passé composé with être instead of avoir. Most describe movement or a change of state.

Another way to remember them is as a "house": you arrive, enter, go up the stairs, stay, fall, go down, go out, leave… and are born and die.
Agreement with the subject
With être, the past participle agrees with the subject, like an adjective: add -e for feminine and -s for plural.

- Il est arrivé hier.He arrived yesterday.

- Nous sommes partis tôt.We left early.
- Mes sœurs sont nées à Lyon.My sisters were born in Lyon.
- Victor Hugo est mort en 1885.Victor Hugo died in 1885.
With a direct object, switch to avoir
Monter, descendre, sortir, rentrer, retourner, passer take avoir when they have a direct object:
- Je suis sorti.I went out. / J'ai sorti le chien.
- Elle est montée.She went up. / Elle a monté les valises.
All reflexive verbs also use être: Pronominal verbs.
