Pronominal verbs – passé composé
Je me suis levé(e)
Every reflexive (pronominal) verb forms its passé composé with être. The reflexive pronoun goes in front of être.
How to form it
reflexive pronoun + être + past participle
| se lever | |
|---|---|
| je | me suis levé(e) |
| tu | t'es levé(e) |
| il / elle | s'est levé / levée |
| nous | nous sommes levé(e)s |
| vous | vous êtes levé(e)(s) |
| ils / elles | se sont levés / levées |
- Je me suis réveillé à 7 h.I woke up at 7.
- Elle s'est habillée rapidement. She got dressed quickly.
- Nous nous sommes bien amusés.We had a great time.
- Ils se sont mariés en juin. They got married in June.
Agreement
In most cases, the participle agrees with the subject: elle s'est levée, elles se sont levées.
The exception: a direct object after the verb
When the verb has a direct object (often a body part), the reflexive pronoun is indirect and there's no agreement:
- Elle s'est lavée.She washed (herself). → agreement
- Elle s'est lavé les mains. She washed her hands. → no agreement
- Ils se sont parlé.They spoke to each other. → no agreement (parler à)
Negative and question
- Je ne me suis pas réveillé.I didn't wake up.
- Tu t'es bien reposé ?Did you have a good rest?
- Vous êtes-vous amusés ?Did you have fun? (formal)
