Negation with the passé composé
Je n'ai pas mangé
In compound tenses like the passé composé, the negation goes around the auxiliary (avoir or être), not around the past participle.
The pattern
ne + auxiliary + pas + past participle
- Je n'ai pas mangé.I didn't eat.
- Il n'est pas venu.He didn't come.
- Nous n'avons pas compris.We didn't understand.
- Elles ne sont pas encore arrivées.They haven't arrived yet.
Other negative words work the same way
- Je n'ai jamais vu la mer.I've never seen the sea.
- Il n'a rien dit.He didn't say anything.
- Nous ne sommes plus allés là-bas.We didn't go there any more.
With reflexive and object pronouns
Ne goes before the pronouns, pas after the auxiliary:
- Elle ne s'est pas levée.She didn't get up.
- Je ne l'ai pas vu.I didn't see him/it.
- Tu ne lui as pas téléphoné ?Didn't you call him/her?
The exceptions: personne, nulle part, aucun
These go after the participle:
- Je n'ai vu personne.I didn't see anyone.
- Il n'est allé nulle part.He didn't go anywhere.
- Je n'ai eu aucun problème.I didn't have any problems.
Negative questions
- Tu n'as pas faim ?Aren't you hungry?
- N'as-tu pas compris ?Didn't you understand? (formal)
