Negation – ne … guère, ne … nulle part, ne … pas du tout

Position in compound tenses

Pas du tout, pas encore, plus jamais, guère go around the auxiliary. Nulle part goes after the participle:

  • Je ne l'ai pas encore vu.I haven't seen him yet.
  • Je ne l'ai vu nulle part.I haven't seen it anywhere.

Short answers

  • Tu es fâché ? – Pas du tout !Are you angry? – Not at all!
  • Tu as fini ? – Pas encore.Have you finished? – Not yet.

Combining negatives

French allows several negative words together (without pas): Personne ne dit jamais rien. = Nobody ever says anything.
