Avant de, sans, au lieu de + infinitive

Prepositions followed by an infinitive

Almost all French prepositions are followed by the infinitive, where English uses the -ing form.

Preposition + infinitive

  • sans parlerwithout speaking
  • au lieu de travaillerinstead of working
  • avant de partirbefore leaving
  • pour comprendre(in order) to understand
  • à force de répéterthrough repeating
  • afin de réussirso as to succeed
  • Il est parti sans payer.He left without paying.
  • Au lieu de dormir, lis un livre !Instead of sleeping, read a book!
  • À force de pratiquer, tu vas progresser.By practising, you'll improve.

Exception 1: en + present participle

En is the only preposition followed by the -ant form: en marchant (while walking). See Gerund.

Exception 2: après + past infinitive

  • après avoir mangéafter eating

Negative infinitive

Both parts of the negative go before the infinitive:

  • Je préfère ne pas savoir.I'd rather not know.
  • Il m'a dit de ne pas venir.He told me not to come.
  • pour ne pas oublierso as not to forget

Sans + noun: no article

  • un café sans sucre, sans problème, sans doute
