J'habite à… = I live in…

À + city

To say where you live, use habiter à + the name of a city or town.

J'habite à…

  • J'habite à Paris.I live in Paris.
  • Tu habites à Londres ?Do you live in London?
  • Mes parents habitent à Montréal.My parents live in Montreal.

Habiter is a regular -er verb that starts with a mute h, so je becomes j': j'habite, and the plural links with a z: ils‿habitent.

À with cities = in, at, to

The preposition à covers in, at and to with cities:

  • Je suis à Rome.I'm in Rome.
  • Je vais à Bruxelles.I'm going to Brussels.

  • For your home address: J'habite au 12, rue Victor Hugo.

Countries are different

Countries use en, au, aux depending on gender:
