Avant de + infinitive

Before doing something

To say before doing or after doing something, French uses an infinitive where English uses -ing.

Avant de + infinitive

  • Lave-toi les mains avant de manger.Wash your hands before eating.
  • Réfléchis avant de parler.Think before you speak.
  • J'appelle toujours avant de venir.I always call before coming.

Avant + noun

  • avant le dînerbefore dinner
  • avant midibefore noon

Après + past infinitive

After doing uses the past infinitive: avoir/être + past participle.

  • Après avoir mangé, on est sortis.After eating, we went out.
  • Après être rentrée, elle s'est couchée.After getting home, she went to bed.

Same subject only

These structures work only when both actions have the same subject. With different subjects, use avant que + subjunctive or après que + indicative:

  • Je pars avant qu'il arrive.I'm leaving before he arrives.
