Depuis, il y a, pendant
For, since, ago
For, since and ago are expressed with three different words in French, and the tense changes depending on which one you use.
Il y a = ago
il y a + duration, with a past tense:
- Je suis arrivé il y a deux jours.I arrived two days ago.
- Il a appelé il y a une heure.He called an hour ago.
Pendant = for (a completed period)
pendant + duration, usually with the passé composé or future:
- J'ai dormi pendant huit heures.I slept for eight hours.
- Nous avons habité à Rome pendant trois ans.We lived in Rome for three years. (we don't any more)
- Je vais travailler pendant deux semaines.I'll work for two weeks.
Pendant is often dropped: J'ai dormi huit heures.
Depuis = for / since (still going on)
depuis + duration or starting point, with the present tense:
- J'habite ici depuis cinq ans.I've been living here for five years.
- J'apprends le français depuis janvier.I've been learning French since January.
- Il pleut depuis ce matin.It's been raining since this morning.
English uses have been / has been; French uses the present because the action is still happening.
