Ça fait deux ans que j'habite ici

There are three ways to say how long something has been going on. All use the present tense, because the action is still happening.

Three equivalent structures

  • J'habite ici depuis deux ans.
  • Ça fait deux ans que j'habite ici.
  • Il y a deux ans que j'habite ici.

= I've been living here for two years.

Ça fait … que is the most common in speech. Il y a … que is a bit more formal.

Duration vs starting point

  • Depuis works with a duration or a starting point: depuis deux ans, depuis 2020, depuis lundi.
  • Ça fait … que and il y a … que only work with a duration: ça fait deux ans que… (not ça fait 2020 que).

Questions

  • Depuis combien de temps tu apprends le français ?How long have you been learning French?
  • Ça fait combien de temps que tu attends ?How long have you been waiting?
  • Depuis quand ?Since when?

In the negative

For something you haven't done for a while, the passé composé is common:

  • Ça fait un an que je ne l'ai pas vu.I haven't seen him for a year.
  • Je ne l'ai pas vu depuis des semaines.I haven't seen him for weeks.

In the past

With the imparfait: J'habitais là depuis deux ans quand j'ai rencontré Paul. = I had been living there for two years when I met Paul.
