Passer un examen ≠ pass an exam

Passer is a very flexible verb, and one of its meanings is a famous false friend.

Main meanings

To pass by, go past, stop by: > Je passe chez toi ce soir. = I'll stop by your place tonight. > Le bus passe toutes les dix minutes. = The bus comes every ten minutes.

To spend (time): > J'ai passé une semaine à Rome. = I spent a week in Rome. > On a passé une bonne soirée. = We had a nice evening.

To pass, hand (something): > Passe-moi le sel. = Pass me the salt.

To take (sit) an exam: false friend! > Je passe mon examen demain. = I'm taking my exam tomorrow.

To pass an exam is réussir (à) un examen; to fail is rater or échouer à:

Se passer

To happen, to go (well/badly): > Qu'est-ce qui se passe ? = What's going on? > Ça s'est bien passé ? = Did it go well?

Se passer de = to do without: > Je ne peux pas me passer de café. = I can't do without coffee.

Auxiliary

Passer uses être when it means going past (Il est passé par Lyon) and avoir with a direct object (J'ai passé une semaine…).
