C'est = it is, this is, that is

Pointing things out

C'est (ce + est) is one of the most frequent phrases in French. It means it is, this is, that is, and even he is / she is in some contexts.

Introducing and identifying

  • C'est mon ami Marc. This is my friend Marc.
  • Qui est-ce ? – C'est ma sœur.Who's that? – It's my sister.
  • Qu'est-ce que c'est ? – C'est un cadeau.What is it? – It's a present.

Commenting on something

C'est + a masculine adjective gives a general reaction:

  • C'est beau !It's beautiful!
  • C'est difficile.It's difficult.
  • C'est génial !That's great!

The adjective stays masculine even when you're talking about something feminine, because c' refers to the whole situation: La plage ? C'est beau !

Plural: ce sont

  • Ce sont mes parents. These are my parents.

In everyday speech, many people say c'est even for plurals: C'est mes parents. It's common but informal; write ce sont.

Negative and question

  • Ce n'est pas grave.It doesn't matter.
  • Ce n'est pas vrai !That's not true!
  • C'est vrai ?Really?
  • Est-ce que c'est loin ?Is it far?

C'est needs a determiner before a noun (c'est un livre). To describe a specific person with a bare adjective, use il est / elle est. See C'est vs il est / elle est.
