These three everyday expressions are built with avoir + a noun, and are followed by de.

  • J'ai besoin d'un stylo.I need a pen.
  • J'ai besoin d'aide.I need help.
  • Tu as envie d'une glace ?Do you feel like an ice cream?
  • Elle a peur des chiens.She's afraid of dogs.
  • Il a peur du noir.He's afraid of the dark.

Remember the contractions: de + le = du, de + les = des.

+ infinitive

  • J'ai besoin de dormir.I need to sleep.
  • J'ai envie de sortir ce soir.I feel like going out tonight.
  • J'ai peur de tomber.I'm afraid of falling.
