Saying something exists
Il y a means there is and there are. It never changes for singular or plural.
Affirmative
- Il y a un problème.There's a problem.
- Il y a trois chambres dans la maison.There are three bedrooms in the house.
- Il y a du pain sur la table.There's some bread on the table.
- Il y a beaucoup de monde !There are lots of people!
It's literally "it there has", which is why it uses avoir, not être.
Negative: il n'y a pas de
In the negative, un, une, des, du, de la become de / d':
- Il n'y a pas de lait.There's no milk.
- Il n'y a pas d'hôtel ici.There isn't a hotel here.
