Partir, sortir, quitter, laisser

Four ways to leave

English leave has four main French equivalents. They're not interchangeable.

Partir: to leave, go away (no direct object)

The opposite of arriver. Used alone, or with de (from) or pour / à (for, to):

  • Je pars demain.I'm leaving tomorrow.
  • Le train part à 8 h.The train leaves at 8.
  • Il est parti de Paris. He left Paris.
  • Elle part pour le Canada. She's leaving for Canada.

Sortir: to go out, exit

The opposite of entrer:

  • On sort ce soir ?Shall we go out tonight?
  • Il est sorti du bureau. He came out of the office.
  • Elle sort avec Marc. She's going out with Marc.

Quitter: to leave someone or somewhere (direct object needed)

  • Elle a quitté son mari. She left her husband.
  • Je quitte le bureau à 18 h.I leave the office at 6 pm.
  • Ne quittez pas.Hold the line. (on the phone)

Quitter always needs an object. Je quitte alone is incomplete. Also, quitter is not "to quit" a habit: that's arrêter: J'ai arrêté de fumer.

Laisser: to leave something behind, or to let

  • J'ai laissé mes clés dans la voiture.I left my keys in the car.
  • Laisse-moi tranquille !Leave me alone!
  • Laisse-moi parler.Let me speak.
