French grammar lessons › Level A2 › Negative Words & Constructions

Negation – ne … personne, ne … aucun(e), ne … que

Nobody, not a single, only

Beyond ne … pas, jamais, plus and rien, three more negative structures are very common.

Ne … personne: nobody

  • Je ne connais personne ici.I don't know anybody here.
  • Il n'y a personne.There's nobody there.
  • Personne n'est venu.Nobody came. (as subject, personne goes first, still with ne)

In compound tenses, personne goes after the participle: Je n'ai vu personne.

Ne … aucun(e): not a single, no

Aucun is an adjective, so it agrees with the noun. It's almost always singular.

  • Je n'ai aucune idée.I have no idea.
  • Il n'y a aucun problème.There's no problem at all.
  • Aucun élève n'a compris.Not a single student understood.

Ne … que: only

Ne … que is not really a negative: it restricts. Que goes right before the thing restricted.

  • Je n'ai que dix euros.I only have ten euros.
  • Il ne mange que des légumes. He only eats vegetables.
  • Je ne travaille que le matin.I only work in the mornings.

Because it's not a negative, the articles don't change to de: Je ne bois que du thé.

Rien as subject

  • Rien ne marche !Nothing works!
  • Rien n'est impossible.Nothing is impossible.

Short answers

  • Qui est là ? – Personne.Who's there? – Nobody.
