Negation – ne … ni … ni
Neither … nor
Ne … ni … ni means neither … nor. Put ni before each item and ne before the verb.
The pattern
- Je n'aime ni le thé ni le café.I like neither tea nor coffee.
- Il n'est ni grand ni petit.He's neither tall nor short.
- Elle ne parle ni anglais ni allemand.She speaks neither English nor German.
- Je ne veux ni manger ni boire.I don't want to eat or drink.
Articles disappear
The indefinite and partitive articles (un, une, des, du, de la) are dropped:
- J'ai du pain et du vin. → Je n'ai ni pain ni vin.
- Il a un frère et une sœur. → Il n'a ni frère ni sœur.
Definite articles stay: Je n'aime ni le thé ni le café.
As subject
- Ni Paul ni Marie ne sont venus.Neither Paul nor Marie came.
The verb is usually plural.
Two verbs
- Il ne mange ni ne boit.He neither eats nor drinks.
Moi non plus / ni moi
- Je n'aime pas ça. – Moi non plus.I don't like it. – Me neither.
Ne … pas … ni
Also possible: Je n'aime pas le thé ni le café. The ni … ni version is more emphatic.
