Negation – ne … jamais, ne … plus, ne … rien
Never, no longer, nothing
Replace pas with another word to give the negative a more precise meaning. The structure stays the same: ne + verb + negative word.
The main negative words
| ne … jamais | never | Je ne fume jamais. |
|---|---|---|
| ne … plus | no longer, not any more | Il ne travaille plus ici. |
| ne … rien | nothing, not anything | Je ne vois rien. |
| ne … personne | nobody, not anyone | Je ne connais personne. (Negation) |
- Elle ne mange jamais de viande. She never eats meat.
- Je n'ai plus faim.I'm not hungry any more.
- Tu ne dis rien ?Aren't you saying anything?
- Il n'y a plus de pain. There's no more bread.
Don't add pas
These words replace pas. Je ne fume pas jamais is wrong.
Short answers
The negative word can stand alone (without ne):
- Tu fumes ? – Jamais !Do you smoke? – Never!
- Qu'est-ce que tu veux ? – Rien.What do you want? – Nothing.
Plus: careful with pronunciation
- ne … plus (no more): the s is silent: Je n'en veux plus (plu).
- plus (more): the s is often pronounced: J'en veux plus (pluss).
In casual speech, without the ne, only pronunciation tells them apart!
Combining
Some negatives combine: Je ne dis plus jamais rien. = I never say anything any more.
