Imparfait – formation
Je parlais, nous finissions
The imparfait (imperfect) is the second main past tense. It's used for descriptions, habits and ongoing actions in the past. Luckily it's the most regular tense in French.
How to form it
- Take the nous form of the present tense.
- Remove -ons to get the stem.
- Add the imparfait endings.
| ending | parler (nous parl-ons) | finir (nous finiss-ons) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| je | -ais | parlais | finissais |
| tu | -ais | parlais | finissais |
| il / elle / on | -ait | parlait | finissait |
| nous | -ions | parlions | finissions |
| vous | -iez | parliez | finissiez |
| ils / elles | -aient | parlaient | finissaient |
The endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -aient all sound the same: è.
Irregular verbs follow the rule too
- avoir: nous av-ons → j'avais
- faire: nous fais-ons → je faisais
- prendre: nous pren-ons → je prenais
- boire: nous buv-ons → je buvais
The one exception: être
- j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient
Spelling changes
-ger and -cer verbs keep their soft sound before a:
- manger → je mangeais, nous mangions
- commencer → je commençais, nous commencions
Impersonal verbs
- il faut → il fallait, il pleut → il pleuvait, il y a → il y avait
