Passé composé – irregular past participles
J'ai fait, j'ai pris, j'ai vu…
Many of the most common verbs have irregular past participles. You need to learn them by heart, but they fall into a few groups.
Ending in -u

Ending in -ert
- ouvrir → ouvert, offrir → offert, découvrir → découvert, souffrir → souffert
Others
- être → été, naître → né, mourir → mort
- J'ai eu de la chance.I was lucky.
- Il a été malade.He was ill.
- Tu as fait tes devoirs ?Did you do your homework?
- Nous avons pris le train.We took the train.
- Ils ont vu le film.They saw the film.
- J'ai dû partir.I had to leave.
Dû (from devoir) has a circumflex to distinguish it from du (some). It loses it in the other forms: due, dus, dues.
Families share participles
Verbs built on the same root share the pattern: prendre → pris, comprendre → compris, surprendre → surpris; mettre → mis, promettre → promis, permettre → permis.
