The participle is the verb form you use after haber in the present perfect (The present perfect (he hablado) and when Spain uses it): he hablado, has comido. Regular participles end in -ado (-ar verbs) or -ido (-er and -ir verbs). A small group of very common verbs have irregular participles, and you need them all the time.

Compound verbs follow the same pattern
A verb built on one of these keeps the irregularity: deshacer → deshecho, devolver → devuelto, describir → descrito, descubrir → descubierto, componer → compuesto, prever → previsto.
- Han descubierto un planeta nuevo. They have discovered a new planet.
Accent on -ído
When the stem ends in a, e or o, regular -ido takes an accent: leer → leído, oír → oído, traer → traído, caer → caído, creer → creído. Without it, -ei- would merge into one syllable.
Participles as adjectives
A participle can also describe a noun, like an adjective. Then it agrees in gender and number, just like bonito/bonita. You will often see it with estar for a result (Ser or estar: the core contrast):
- La tienda está abierta hasta las nueve. The shop is open until nine.
- Las ventanas están rotas. The windows are broken.
| After haber: never changes | As an adjective: agrees |
|---|---|
| La niña ha escrito una carta. | una carta escrita a mano |
| Han abierto las puertas. | las puertas abiertas |
The same participles build the pluperfect (había hecho) at B1: The pluperfect: había hablado.
Common mistakes
Hacido, decido, escribido, ponido→ hecho, dicho, escrito, puesto.Abrido, volvido, rompido→ abierto, vuelto, roto.Ella ha escrita→ Ella ha escrito. No agreement after haber.La puerta está abierto→ La puerta está abierta. As an adjective, it agrees.Leido, oido→ leído, oído. They need the accent.
