Part of the free A2 Spanish course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

You know the short possessives that go before a noun: mi, tu, su, nuestro, vuestro (Possessive adjectives: mi, tu, su, nuestro, vuestro). Spanish also has a long form that is used to say mine, yours, his… and after a noun.

The long forms

OwnerLong form
yomío, mía, míos, mías
tútuyo, tuya, tuyos, tuyas
él, ella, ustedsuyo, suya, suyos, suyas
nosotros/asnuestro, nuestra, nuestros, nuestras
vosotros/asvuestro, vuestra, vuestros, vuestras
ellos, ellas, ustedessuyo, suya, suyos, suyas

They agree in gender and number with the thing owned, not with the owner. A woman says El abrigo es mío* because abrigo* is masculine.

After ser: "it's mine"

After ser, to say who something belongs to, use the long form without an article:

  • Este paraguas es mío.This umbrella is mine.
  • ¿Es tuya esta chaqueta? Is this jacket yours?
  • Estas llaves no son mías.These keys aren't mine.

With el, la, los, las: "mine" instead of a noun

To replace a noun you've already mentioned, put the article in front: el mío, la tuya, los nuestros.

  • Mi coche es rojo y el tuyo es azul.My car is red and yours is blue.
  • Nuestra casa es más pequeña que la vuestra. Our house is smaller than yours.
  • Mis padres viven en Madrid, y los suyos en Bilbao. My parents live in Madrid, and his live in Bilbao.
  • La mía es la negra.Mine is the black one.

After a noun: "a friend of mine"

  • Un amigo mío trabaja en ese hotel.A friend of mine works in that hotel.

Also in set phrases:

  • ¡Dios mío, qué tarde es!My goodness, it's late!

Suyo can be ambiguous

Suyo can mean his, hers, yours (usted), theirs or yours (ustedes). When it isn't clear, use de + person: el de él, la de ella, los de usted, las de ellos.

  • Este libro no es suyo, es de su hermano. This book isn't his, it's his brother's.

Lo mío means "my thing": El fútbol no es lo mío (Football isn't my thing).

Latin America

With no vosotros, "yours" for a group is el suyo or, more clearly, el de ustedes: Nuestra casa es más pequeña que la de ustedes.

Common mistakes

  • Es mi: mi needs a noun after it. Say Es mío (or mía).
  • Las llaves son mío: agree with the thing: son mías.
  • A woman saying el bolso es mía: bolso is masculine: es mío.
  • Un amigo de mí, un mi amigo: say un amigo mío.
