News, reports and formal writing in Spanish are full of abstract nouns made from verbs and adjectives: la subida de los precios, el crecimiento, la desigualdad. A suffix is an ending added to a word to make a new word. Knowing a few suffixes lets you understand, and build, hundreds of words. Many suffixes also tell you the gender.

Many very common verbs simply drop the ending: pagar → el pago, desarrollar → el desarrollo, cambiar → el cambio, ayudar → la ayuda, comprar → la compra. Don't add -miento to these.

Spelling and accents

  • -ción, -sión carry an accent in the singular but not in the plural (Word stress, written accents, ¿ and ¡): the stress stays on the same syllable, but the plural adds a syllable, so the word now ends in -s with the stress on the second-to-last syllable, which needs no accent: la negociación, las negociaciones.
  • z becomes c before e and i: feliz → felicidad, veloz → velocidad.
  • Las negociaciones duraron toda la noche. The negotiations went on all night.

Prefixes: des-, in-, re-

A prefix is added at the front. Des- and in- make opposites: empleo → desempleo, confianza → desconfianza, justicia → injusticia. In- becomes im- before p and b (imposible), i- before l (ilegal) and ir- before r (irresponsable).

  • El desempleo juvenil sigue siendo muy alto.Youth unemployment is still very high.
  • Ha aumentado la desconfianza hacia las instituciones.Distrust of institutions has increased.

Common mistakes

  • el organización, el libertad: nouns in -ción, -sión, -dad, -tad are feminine.
  • las organizaciónes: the accent disappears in the plural.
  • el pagamiento, el desarrollamiento: English -ment is not always -miento. Say el pago, el desarrollo.
  • la felizdad: z changes to c before e and i: felicidad.
  • la aprendizaje: nouns in -aje are masculine: el aprendizaje.

Latin America

The suffixes are the same. A few everyday nouns differ by region (Spain el aparcamiento, much of Latin America el estacionamiento), but the patterns are shared.
