Chinese grammar lessons › Level B1 › Questions in Chinese: 吗, question words and particles

Sentence particles: 吧, 呢, 啊, 嘛, 啦

The little words at the end of a sentence carry the attitude: suggesting (吧), following up (呢), feeling (啊), stating the obvious (嘛).

Part of the free B1 Chinese course (about HSK 4). Examples are in Simplified characters, with pinyin only for some new or hard words; press the speaker to hear one with your device's Chinese voice.

Small words, big difference

A particle at the end of a sentence doesn't change the facts; it changes the tone. Learners who leave them out sound abrupt, so it's worth learning what each one does. You already know 吗 (Yes/no questions with 吗), which turns a statement into a yes/no question.

ParticleMain jobsExample
吧 (ba)suggestion; mild request; "I suppose…, right?"我们走吧。Let's go.
呢 (ne)"and you?"; "where is…?"; softens a question-word question; action going on你呢?And you?
啊 (a)feeling: surprise, enthusiasm, warmth真好啊!How lovely!
嘛 (ma)"obviously, after all"; coaxing他是孩子嘛。He's a kid, after all.
啦 (la)了 + 啊 run together: lively, often a change我回来啦!I'm back!

吧: suggesting and guessing

  • 我们一起去吧。Let's go together.
  • 你是新来的同事吧?You're the new colleague, I take it?

With a question mark, 吧 asks for confirmation of something you're fairly sure about. With 吗 you have no idea.

呢: following up and "where is"

  • 我挺好的,你呢?I'm fine. And you?
  • 我的眼镜呢?Where are my glasses?

呢 also softens questions with a question word (你在想什么呢?) and marks an action in progress (他睡觉呢 = he's asleep right now).

啊 and its forms

啊 adds feeling. It often blends with the sound before it, and the spelling can follow:

After a word ending inSounds and is often writtenExample
a, e, i, o, ü呀 (ya)快去呀!
u, ao, ou哇 (wa)好哇!
n哪 (na)天哪!
ng啊 (nga)行啊!

In practice many people write 啊 or 呀 everywhere; the rule describes the sound.

  • 这个地方真美啊!This place is so beautiful!
  • 天哪!Oh my goodness!

嘛 and 啦

嘛 says "it's obvious" or coaxes gently. It is not a question particle, even though it sounds like 吗.

  • 别着急嘛,时间还早。Don't rush, it's still early.
  • 我回来啦!I'm back!

Common mistakes

  • 你是学生嘛? → 你是学生吗? For a yes/no question use 吗; 嘛 means "obviously".
  • 你为什么不来吗? → 你为什么不来呢? A question with a question word never takes 吗; 呢 softens it.
  • 我们走呢。 → 我们走吧。 "Let's" is 吧.
  • Piling particles into formal writing: 啊, 嘛 and 啦 are for speech and chat messages, not reports.
