Part of the free C1 Chinese course (about HSK 6 and above). Examples are in Simplified characters, with pinyin only for some new or hard words; press the speaker to hear one with your device's Chinese voice.

Questions that are really statements

A rhetorical question (反问句) states the opposite of its literal form. A positive question makes a negative claim, and a negative question a positive one.

PatternLiterallyReally means
难道…吗?Can it be that…?Surely not / surely so
哪儿 / 哪里 + verb?Where…?Not at all
谁不…?Who doesn't…?Everybody does
怎么能…呢?How can…?You shouldn't
不是…吗?Isn't it…?It is, as you know
  • 难道你不知道吗?Don't tell me you didn't know.
  • 我哪儿有时间看电视?Where would I find time to watch TV?
  • 谁不想过好日子?Who doesn't want a good life?
  • 这不是你的书吗?Isn't this your book?

Sarcasm: 还…呢

还 + identity + 呢 means "and you call yourself…!": the person falls short of what they are supposed to be.

  • 你还大学生呢,连这个字都不认识!And you call yourself a university student: you can't even read this character!

Brushing something aside: 什么 A 不 A 的

Repeating a word around 不 with 什么 in front and 的 at the end waves the topic away: "never mind about A".

  • 什么谢不谢的,咱们是朋友。Don't mention thanks, we're friends.

Understatement and irony

Chinese often criticises by saying less: 不怎么样 (not up to much), 不太理想 (not ideal) can mean "poor". Irony says the opposite in a pointed tone.

  • 他的中文不怎么样。His Chinese isn't up to much.
  • 你可真会挑时间!You really know how to pick your moment!

Irony depends on tone and context. With people you don't know well, 还…呢 can wound: save it for friends or for written satire.

Common mistakes

  • 难道你几点起床? → 你几点起床?难道 can't go with a question word such as 几点, 谁 or 什么 asking for information.
  • 什么钱不的 → 什么钱不钱的. The pattern repeats the word on both sides of 不.
  • Answering 我哪儿知道? with directions: it means "How would I know?".
  • Using 还…呢 as neutral description: 你还老师呢 is a put-down, not "you are still a teacher".
