Plural adjectives

Add -s in the plural

Adjectives also agree in number: in the plural, add -s (after any feminine -e).

The four forms

singularplural
masculinepetitpetits
femininepetitepetites
  • un chat noir → des chats noirs
  • une chemise blanche → des chemises blanches
  • Il est content. → Ils sont contents.

The plural s is silent, just like on nouns.

No change for -s and -x

Masculine adjectives ending in -s or -x don't change in the masculine plural:

  • un homme heureux → des hommes heureux
  • un pull gris → des pulls gris
  • un ami français → des amis français

But their feminine plural is regular: heureuses, grises, françaises.

Mixed groups: masculine wins

When an adjective describes a group of masculine and feminine nouns, use the masculine plural:

  • Paul et Julie sont fatigués.Paul and Julie are tired.
  • une jupe et un pull noirsa black skirt and jumper

-al → -aux

  • un problème national → des problèmes nationaux
  • un ami loyal → des amis loyaux

Some exceptions take -als: banals, finals, fatals, navals.
