Une voiture rouge
In English, adjectives go before the noun (a red car). In French, most adjectives go after it: une voiture rouge.
Most adjectives follow the noun
- un film intéressantan interesting film
- une ville modernea modern city
- un homme sympathiquea nice man
- une question difficilea difficult question
Always after the noun
These categories always follow the noun:
- colours: une robe noire, des yeux bleus
- nationalities: un restaurant italien, la cuisine française
- shapes: une table ronde, un visage carré
- past participles used as adjectives: une porte fermée, un livre ouvert
- long adjectives: une décision importante, un paysage magnifique
- J'ai acheté une voiture allemande.I bought a German car.
- C'est une histoire vraie.It's a true story.
The exceptions: BAGS
A small group of very common, short adjectives normally go before the noun: Beauty, Age, Good/bad, Size: beau, joli, jeune, vieux, nouveau, bon, mauvais, grand, petit…
- un petit chien, une belle maison, un bon repas
