Spanish grammar lessons › Level A1 › The Spanish present tense and stem-changing verbs

Stem-changing verbs o → ue, u → ue (poder, jugar)

Puedo, duermo, cuesta, juego: o and u become ue in the boot forms.

The second boot pattern

In Stem-changing verbs e → ie (querer, empezar) the stressed e became ie. In this group the stressed o becomes ue. It happens in the same four forms (yo, tú, él/ella/usted, ellos/ustedes) and never in nosotros and vosotros.

Other common o → ue verbs: contar (to count; to tell), encontrar (to find), costar (to cost), recordar (to remember), soñar (to dream), mover (to move), llover (to rain: only llueve).

  • ¿Puedo abrir la ventana?Can I open the window?
  • No podemos ir el jueves. We can't go on Thursday.
  • Duermo ocho horas.I sleep eight hours.
  • Vuelvo a casa a las seis.I come back home at six.
  • ¿Recuerdas su nombre?Do you remember his name?
  • No encuentro mi móvil.I can't find my mobile.
  • Hoy llueve mucho. It's raining a lot today.

Costar: one thing or several

Costar is almost always used in the third person: cuesta for one thing, cuestan for several.

  • ¿Cuánto cuesta el billete? How much does the ticket cost?
  • Los zapatos cuestan cincuenta euros. The shoes cost fifty euros.

Jugar: the only u → ue verb

Jugar (to play) changes u to ue: juego, juegas, juega, jugamos, jugáis, juegan. In Spain it is followed by a + the article for sports and games: jugar al fútbol, jugar a las cartas.

  • Mi hijo juega al fútbol los sábados. My son plays football on Saturdays.
  • Jugamos a las cartas después de cenar. We play cards after dinner.

For musical instruments, Spanish uses tocar, not jugar: Toco la guitarra = I play the guitar.

Latin America

In much of Latin America you'll hear jugar fútbol without al; both are correct. Celular is the usual word for a mobile phone. Plural "you" is ustedes pueden, ustedes juegan.

Common mistakes

  • Puedemos → Podemos. Nosotros is outside the boot.
  • Yo jugo → Yo juego.
  • Juego el piano → Toco el piano.
  • Los libros cuesta mucho → Los libros cuestan mucho. The verb agrees with the thing that costs.
  • Puedo hablo → Puedo hablar. After poder, the second verb stays in the infinitive (Querer, poder, necesitar + infinitive).
