Two verbs together
To say what you want, can or need to do, conjugate the first verb and leave the second in the infinitive (the dictionary form, ending in -ar, -er or -ir). Nothing goes between them: no "to", no a.
querer / poder / necesitar (conjugated) + infinitive
| Verb | meaning | yo | example |
|---|---|---|---|
| querer (e → ie) | to want | quiero | Quiero descansar. |
| poder (o → ue) | can, to be able, may | puedo | Puedo ayudar. |
| necesitar | to need | necesito | Necesito dormir. |
| preferir (e → ie) | to prefer | prefiero | Prefiero caminar. |
The stem changes are the ones from Stem-changing verbs e → ie (querer, empezar) and Stem-changing verbs o → ue, u → ue (poder, jugar).
- Quiero viajar a México.I want to travel to Mexico.
- ¿Quieres tomar algo?Do you want something to drink?
- Mis padres quieren vivir en el campo. My parents want to live in the countryside.
- No puedo dormir.I can't sleep.
- ¿Podéis venir el sábado? Can you all come on Saturday?
- Necesito comprar leche.I need to buy milk.
- Necesitamos descansar. We need to rest.
Asking, offering and permission
Poder is the polite way to ask for things and for permission:
- ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?Can I pay by card?
- ¿Puedes hablar más despacio? Can you speak more slowly?
With usted: ¿Puede usted repetir? (No entiendo, ¿Puede repetir?, ¿Cómo se dice…?).
Negatives
No goes before the conjugated verb: No quiero salir = I don't want to go out.
Reflexive verbs and pronouns
With a reflexive verb (Reflexive verbs for the daily routine (levantarse)) the pronoun goes before the first verb or is attached to the infinitive. Both are correct and common.
- ¿Me puedo sentar aquí?Can I sit here?
- Prefiero quedarme en casa.I'd rather stay at home.
Poder or saber?
Poder = to be able or allowed in a situation. For a skill you have learned, Spanish uses saber + infinitive (Saber or conocer).
- Sé nadar.I can swim (I know how to).
Some verbs do need a preposition before an infinitive: ir a (Ir and ir a + infinitive (plans)), empezar a, aprender a, tener que (Obligation: tener que, hay que). Querer, poder, necesitar and preferir never do.
Latin America
The structure is the same. Plural "you" is ustedes pueden, ustedes quieren. Riding a bike is montar en bici in Spain and andar en bici in much of Latin America.
Common mistakes
Quiero a viajar→ Quiero viajar.Puedo hablo→ Puedo hablar. Only the first verb is conjugated.Necesito a comprar→ Necesito comprar.Puedo me sentar→ Me puedo sentar or Puedo sentarme.Puedo tocar el pianofor a skill → Sé tocar el piano.
