A second verb "to be"

Spanish has two verbs for English to be. You already know ser (Ser: soy, eres, es…) for what someone or something is: name, origin, job, description. The second is estar, for two things:

  1. how someone is right now (well, tired, happy);
  2. where someone or something is.
personestar (to be)
yoestoy
túestás
él / ella / ustedestá
nosotros / nosotrasestamos
vosotros / vosotrasestáis
ellos / ellas / ustedesestán

Write the accents: está means "is", but esta (no accent) means "this". Estás, está, estáis, están are all stressed on the last syllable.

How you are

  • ¿Cómo estás?How are you?
  • Estoy muy bien, gracias.I'm very well, thanks.
  • ¿Cómo está usted?How are you? (formal)
  • ¿Estáis bien?Are you all OK?

Useful words: bien (well), mal (bad, unwell), regular (so-so), cansado (tired), contento (happy), enfermo (ill). Words like cansado change their ending to match the person: a man says estoy cansado, a woman says estoy cansada (Adjectives agree and usually follow the noun).

  • Estoy un poco cansada.I'm a bit tired. (a woman speaking)

Where things are

  • Madrid está en el centro de España.Madrid is in the centre of Spain.
  • ¿Dónde está la estación?Where is the station?
  • Estamos en casa. We're at home.
  • Los niños están en el colegio. The children are at school.

Ser or estar?

Ser de tells you where someone is from; estar en tells you where someone is:

  • Soy de Sevilla, pero estoy en Londres.I'm from Seville, but I'm in London.

This is only the first step. The full contrast comes in Ser or estar: the core contrast.

Common mistakes

  • Soy en casa → Estoy en casa. Location uses estar.
  • Estoy de Madrid → Soy de Madrid. Origin uses ser.
  • ¿Dónde esta? → ¿Dónde está? Without the accent, esta means "this".
  • A woman saying Estoy cansado → Estoy cansada.
  • ¿Cómo eres? to ask "How are you?" → ¿Cómo estás? ¿Cómo eres? asks what someone is like as a person.

Latin America: ustedes están replaces vosotros estáis. ¿Cómo estás? and ¿Cómo está? are used everywhere.
