Me, you, him…

English has object pronouns too: I see him, he sees me. German does the same with the accusative. When a pronoun is the direct object, use these forms:

nominativeaccusativeEnglish
ichmichme
dudichyou (one friend)
erihnhim, it
siesieher, it
esesit
wirunsus
ihreuchyou (several friends)
siesiethem
SieSieyou (formal)

Only ich, du, er, wir, ihr change. Sie, sie and es look the same.

  • Siehst du mich? Can you see me?
  • Ich besuche dich morgen.I'll visit you tomorrow.
  • Ich finde ihn sehr nett.I think he's very nice.
  • Unsere Oma besucht uns oft.Our grandma often visits us.
  • Wir lieben euch.We love you all.
  • Frau Weber, ich verstehe Sie gut.Mrs Weber, I understand you well.

"It" follows the gender

German has no single word for it. The pronoun follows the noun's gender: der word → ihn, die word → sie, das word → es.

  • Der Rock ist schön, aber ich kaufe ihn nicht. The skirt is nice, but I'm not buying it.
  • Mein Handy ist weg, ich suche es überall. My phone has gone, I'm looking everywhere for it.

A short object pronoun comes straight after the verb, before time words and before nicht: Ich sehe ihn morgen. Ich kenne sie nicht.

Common mistakes

  • Ich liebe dir. → Ich liebe dich. Lieben takes the accusative. (Dir is dative: see Dative pronouns: mir, dir, ihm.)
  • Der Film ist gut, ich finde es super. → ich finde ihn super. Der Film is masculine, so "it" is ihn.
  • Ich sehe er. → Ich sehe ihn. The object form of er is ihn.
  • Ich besuche morgen ihn. → Ich besuche ihn morgen. The pronoun goes right after the verb.
