Verbs that take the dative

A few common verbs take a dative object, even though English uses a plain object:

  • helfen (to help): Ich helfe dir.
  • danken (to thank): Ich danke Ihnen.
  • gehören (to belong to): Das gehört mir.
  • gefallen (to please, to be liked): Das gefällt mir.
  • schmecken (to taste good to): Schmeckt es dir?
  • passen (to fit, to suit): Die Hose passt mir nicht.

With gefallen, the thing you like is the subject and the person is in the dative: Die Stadt gefällt mir = I like the city (the city pleases me). For a plural thing the verb is plural: Die Schuhe gefallen mir.

  • Hilfst du mir? Will you help me?
  • Wie geht es Ihnen? How are you?
  • Die Stadt gefällt mir sehr.I really like the city.
  • Gehört das Handy dir?Is this phone yours?
  • Der Kuchen schmeckt uns.We like the cake.
  • Ich danke euch!Thank you all!
  • Wir schenken ihm ein Buch zum Geburtstag. We're giving him a book for his birthday.
  • Die Schuhe passen mir nicht. The shoes don't fit me.

Feelings

Some short sentences describe how you feel with the dative: Mir ist kalt (I'm cold), Mir ist schlecht (I feel sick).

Common mistakes

  • Ich helfe dich. → Ich helfe dir. Helfen takes the dative.
  • Ich gefalle die Stadt. → Die Stadt gefällt mir. The thing is the subject.
  • Das gehört mich. → Das gehört mir.
  • Ich bin kalt. → Mir ist kalt. Ich bin kalt describes your personality, not the temperature.
