Prefixes that separate or not: übersetzen, umfahren, wiederholen

Tell separable from inseparable verbs, and use the stress to tell the double ones apart.

You know separable verbs from Separable verbs: anrufen, aufstehen: anfangen → Der Film fängt um acht an. Some prefixes never separate, and a few can do both, with a different meaning each time. The stress tells you which is which.

Never separable

PrefixExamples
be-, ge-, er-, ver-bekommen, gehören, erklären, verstehen
zer-, ent-, emp-, miss-zerstören, entscheiden, empfehlen, missverstehen

These prefixes are never stressed, they stay on the verb, and the participle has no ge-: verstanden, bekommen, erklärt.

  • Ich habe deine Nachricht leider nicht bekommen.Unfortunately I didn't get your message.

Separable

ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, nach-, vor-, weg-, zu-, zurück- and many more. These prefixes are stressed, they go to the end in a main clause, and the participle has -ge- in the middle: angefangen, aufgestanden. The zu-infinitive has zu in the middle: anzufangen.

  • Hörst du mir überhaupt zu?Are you even listening to me?

Both: über-, um-, durch-, unter-, wieder-

StressTypeExampleParticiple

WIEderholenseparablefetch backwiedergeholt
wiederHOleninseparablerepeatwiederholt
DURCHlesenseparableread throughdurchgelesen

UMziehenseparablemove houseumgezogen

The inseparable meaning is often the more abstract one (translate, repeat), and it is usually the one you need.

  • Kannst du mir diesen Brief übersetzen? Can you translate this letter for me?
  • Die Fähre setzt uns in zehn Minuten über. The ferry will take us across in ten minutes.
  • Der Lehrer wiederholt die Frage noch einmal. The teacher repeats the question once more.
  • Wir sind letzten Monat nach Köln umgezogen. We moved to Cologne last month.
  • Der Fahrer hat das Schild umgefahren. The driver knocked the sign over.
  • Wir haben den Stau zum Glück umfahren.Luckily we drove around the traffic jam.
  • Die Polizei durchsucht das ganze Haus. The police are searching the whole house.

In a dictionary, look for a stress mark or a separator (über|setzen). When you learn a double verb, learn its participle with it: übersetzt tells you the prefix stays.

Common mistakes

  • Ich habe den Text übergesetzt for "translated": Ich habe den Text übersetzt.
  • Ich stehe dich nicht ver: ver- never separates: Ich verstehe dich nicht.
  • geverstanden, gebekommen: no ge- with inseparable prefixes: verstanden, bekommen.
  • Kannst du das holen wieder? for "repeat": Kannst du das wiederholen?
  • zu abschließen: with a separable verb, zu goes inside: abzuschließen.
