Verbs in two parts

Many German verbs start with a small prefix such as an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, zu-, ab-, fern-. In a normal statement or question, the verb part takes second place as usual and the prefix goes to the end of the clause.

infinitivemeaningin a sentence
anrufento call (phone)Ich rufe dich an.
aufstehento get upEr steht um sieben auf.
einkaufento go shoppingWir kaufen heute ein.
fernsehento watch TVSiehst du fern?
ankommento arriveDer Zug kommt um acht an.
mitkommento come alongKommst du mit?
anfangento beginDer Film fängt gleich an.
aufräumento tidy upIch räume mein Zimmer auf.
  • Ich stehe jeden Tag um sieben Uhr auf.I get up at seven every day.
  • Wann kommt der Zug an?When does the train arrive?
  • Lena kauft am Samstag ein.Lena goes shopping on Saturday.
  • Rufst du mich heute Abend an?Will you call me this evening?
  • Wir sehen nicht oft fern.We don't watch TV often.
  • Der Kurs fängt um neun Uhr an.The course starts at nine.
  • Kommst du mit?Are you coming along?

Stem changes still happen: fernsehen → er sieht fern, anfangen → es fängt an (Stem-changing verbs: sprechen, lesen, fahren).

When the verb stays together

With a modal verb, the whole infinitive goes to the end in one word (Modal verbs: können, müssen, wollen, dürfen, sollen):

  • Ich muss heute mein Zimmer aufräumen.I have to tidy my room today.

You can hear a separable prefix: it is stressed. AN-rufen, AUF-stehen, EIN-kaufen. Prefixes like be-, ver-, er-, ent- are never stressed and never separate: besuchen → ich besuche, verstehen → ich verstehe.

Common mistakes

  • Ich aufstehe um sieben. → Ich stehe um sieben auf. The prefix goes to the end.
  • Ich stehe auf um sieben. → Ich stehe um sieben auf. The prefix goes to the very end, after the time.
  • Ich stehe das nicht ver. → Ich verstehe das nicht. Ver- is never separated.
  • Ich muss früh stehe auf. → Ich muss früh aufstehen. After a modal, use the whole infinitive.
