weil and dass: the verb goes to the end

Giving reasons and saying what you think with subordinate clauses

Part of the free A2 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

After und, aber, oder and denn, the word order doesn't change (Joining sentences: und, aber, oder, denn, sondern). weil (because) and dass (that) are different: they start a subordinate clause, and in a subordinate clause the conjugated verb goes to the end. A comma always separates the two clauses.

  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.I'm staying at home because I'm ill.
  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.I'm staying at home, because I'm ill.
Main clauseConjunctionSubjectMiddleVerb at the end
Ich komme nicht,weilichkeine Zeithabe.
Ich glaube,dassder Busgleichkommt.
Lena kann nicht kommen,weilsiearbeitenmuss.
Er ist müde,weilerschlecht geschlafenhat.
  • Separable verbs join up again at the end: weil der Zug um acht abfährt.
  • With a modal verb, the modal comes last, after the infinitive: weil ich arbeiten muss.
  • In the Perfekt, haben or sein comes last: weil er schlecht geschlafen hat.
  • Ich lerne Deutsch, weil meine Freundin aus Wien kommt.I'm learning German because my girlfriend is from Vienna.
  • Wir fahren mit dem Zug, weil das Auto kaputt ist. We're going by train because the car is broken.
  • Sie sagt, dass der Film um acht anfängt. She says that the film starts at eight.

dass

dass introduces what someone thinks, knows, hopes or says: Ich glaube, dass... Ich weiß, dass... Ich hoffe, dass... Es ist schön, dass... Don't confuse it with das (the, that one), which has one s.

  • Ich weiß, dass du recht hast.I know that you're right.
  • Ich hoffe, dass das Wetter morgen schön ist.I hope the weather is nice tomorrow.
  • Es ist schade, dass ihr schon geht. It's a shame that you're leaving already.

After glauben, denken, hoffen you can also leave out dass, and then use normal word order: Ich glaube, er kommt gleich.

The weil clause first

The whole subordinate clause can come first. It then counts as position 1, so the main clause starts with its verb: verb, comma, verb.

  • Weil es so kalt ist, bleiben wir drinnen.Because it's so cold, we're staying inside.

Imagine weil and dass as magnets that pull the conjugated verb to the very end of their clause. In relaxed speech you will hear weil with normal word order, but write and learn the standard form.

  • weil ich bin krank → weil ich krank bin.
