Time first: Heute gehe ich …

Start with a time or place and the verb still comes second, so the subject moves after it.

Part of the free A1 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

The verb stays second

You know that the verb is the second element in a German statement (The verb comes second). The first place doesn't have to be the subject. Very often it is a time expression, and then the subject moves to the place after the verb.

first placeverbsubjectrest
Ichgeheheute ins Kino.
Heutegeheichins Kino.
Am MontagarbeitetLenaim Büro.

A whole phrase counts as one place: am Montag, um sieben Uhr, im Sommer, jeden Abend.

  • Heute gehe ich ins Kino.Today I'm going to the cinema.
  • Am Montag arbeitet Lena im Büro.On Monday Lena works at the office.
  • Um sieben Uhr frühstücken wir.We have breakfast at seven.
  • Im Sommer fahren wir nach Österreich. In the summer we're going to Austria.
  • Morgen besuche ich meine Oma.Tomorrow I'm visiting my grandma.
  • Jeden Abend liest Jonas ein Buch.Jonas reads a book every evening.
  • Dann trinken wir einen Kaffee. Then we'll have a coffee.

Useful time words: heute, morgen, jetzt, dann, später, abends, am Wochenende, um acht Uhr, im Winter, jeden Tag.

Time before place

When the time is not first, put it before the place: when comes before where.

  • Ich fahre morgen mit dem Zug nach Köln.I'm going to Cologne by train tomorrow.

Separable verbs still send their prefix to the end: Morgen rufe ich dich an. (Separable verbs: anrufen, aufstehen)

Common mistakes

  • Heute ich gehe ins Kino. → Heute gehe ich ins Kino. English puts the subject before the verb; German keeps the verb second.
  • Am Montag Lena arbeitet. → Am Montag arbeitet Lena.
  • Ich fahre nach Köln morgen. → Ich fahre morgen nach Köln. In neutral order, time comes before place.
  • Only one element goes before the verb: Heute um acht ich gehe … Either Heute um acht gehe ich … (one time phrase) or start with the subject.
