durchthroughdurch den Park
fürforfür meinen Vater
gegenagainst; around (time)gegen den Plan, gegen acht Uhr
ohnewithoutohne dich
umaround; at (clock time)um den Tisch, um neun Uhr

A memory trick: the first letters make DOGFU: durch, ohne, gegen, für, um.

  • Wir gehen durch den Park. We're walking through the park.
  • Das Geschenk ist für dich. The present is for you.
  • Ich trinke Kaffee ohne Zucker.I drink coffee without sugar.
  • Ich bin gegen den Plan.I'm against the plan.
  • Der Kurs beginnt um neun Uhr.The course begins at nine.
  • Wir sitzen um den Tisch. We're sitting around the table.
  • Ohne meinen Mann fahre ich nicht.I'm not going without my husband.
  • Ich komme gegen acht Uhr.I'll come at around eight.

um or gegen with times

Um acht Uhr is exactly at eight. Gegen acht Uhr is around eight, roughly.

Short forms

In speech, durch das, für das, um das often become durchs, fürs, ums: ums Haus, fürs Wochenende.

Common mistakes

  • für mir → für mich. Für takes the accusative.
  • durch dem Park → durch den Park.
  • Ich warte für dich. → Ich warte auf dich. "Wait for" is warten auf, not für.
  • an zehn Uhr → um zehn Uhr. Clock times take um.
