German grammar lessons › Level A2 › German prepositions and their cases

darauf, worauf, damit, womit

Replace or ask about a thing after a preposition: darauf (on it, for it), worauf (on what, for what).

Part of the free A2 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

In English you can put it or what after any preposition: I'm waiting for it. What are you waiting for? German does not normally say auf es or auf was for things. It uses a compound instead.

Things: da- and wo-

  • To say preposition + it / that, use da + preposition: dafür, damit, davon.
  • To ask preposition + what?, use wo + preposition: wofür, womit, wovon.
  • If the preposition starts with a vowel, add r: dar-auf, wor-auf, dar-an, wor-an, dar-über, wor-über.

andaranworan
überdarüberworüber
umdarumworum
fürdafürwofür
mitdamitwomit
vondavonwovon
vordavorwovor
nachdanachwonach
zudazuwozu

These compounds are especially common with the verbs from Verbs with fixed prepositions.

  • Worauf wartest du?What are you waiting for?
  • Ich warte schon seit Montag darauf.I've been waiting for it since Monday.
  • Wovon träumst du?What do you dream about?
  • Hast du schon davon gehört?Have you heard about it yet?
  • Wir haben lange darüber gesprochen. We talked about it for a long time.

People: preposition + pronoun

For people (and pets you think of as people) you do not use the compound. Keep the preposition and add a pronoun in the right case, or wen / wem in questions.

ThingPerson
Worauf wartest du? Ich warte darauf.Auf wen wartest du? Ich warte auf ihn.
Wofür interessierst du dich? Dafür.Für wen interessierst du dich? Für sie.
  • Auf wen wartest du?Who are you waiting for?
  • Mit wem hast du gesprochen?Who did you speak to?

Pointing forward to a clause

A da-compound can also point forward to a whole idea that follows, in a zu-infinitive (zu + infinitive) or a dass-clause (weil and dass: the verb goes to the end):

  • Ich freue mich darauf, dich zu sehen.I'm looking forward to seeing you.

In relaxed speech you will hear Auf was wartest du? and Über was sprecht ihr? Understand them, but use worauf and worüber: they are the standard forms.

Common mistakes

  • Ich warte auf es. For a thing, use the compound: Ich warte darauf.
  • Woauf wartest du? Before a vowel add r: Worauf.
  • Ich denke daran when you mean a person: Ich denke an ihn or an sie.
  • Womit hast du getanzt? for a person: Mit wem hast du getanzt?
  • Confusing damit "with it" and damit "so that" (um … zu and damit: saying why): the second one sends the verb to the end.
