Putting and being: stellen, stehen, legen, liegen

Verb pairs for putting things somewhere and for where things are

English usually says put and be: I put the bottle on the table; the bottle is on the table. German is more precise. It says how the thing is placed (upright, flat, sitting or hanging), and it uses a pair of verbs for each: one for the action of putting, one for the resulting position.

Putting (Wohin? + accusative)Being (Wo? + dative)
stellen (put upright): stellt, hat gestelltstehen (stand): steht, hat gestanden
legen (lay flat): legt, hat gelegtliegen (lie): liegt, hat gelegen
setzen (sit someone down): setzt, hat gesetztsitzen (sit): sitzt, hat gesessen
hängen (hang up): hängt, hat gehängthängen (be hanging): hängt, hat gehangen
  • The putting verbs are regular, have a direct object and take the accusative after the two-way prepositions (Two-way prepositions: wo? or wohin?).
  • The being verbs are irregular, have no object and take the dative.
  • Ich stelle die Vase auf den Tisch.I put the vase on the table.
  • Die Vase steht auf dem Tisch. The vase is on the table.
  • Er legt die Zeitung auf das Sofa.He puts the newspaper on the sofa.
  • Die Zeitung liegt auf dem Sofa. The newspaper is lying on the sofa.
  • Die Mutter setzt das Baby auf den Stuhl. The mother sits the baby on the chair.
  • Das Baby sitzt auf dem Stuhl. The baby is sitting on the chair.
  • Wir hängen die Jacken in den Schrank. We hang the jackets in the wardrobe.
  • Die Jacken hängen im Schrank. The jackets are hanging in the wardrobe.

Upright or flat?

Things that stand on a base or are upright stehen: bottles, glasses, cups, furniture, books on a shelf. Things lying flat liegen: a book on a table, a phone, a key, a person in bed. Towns and places also liegen, and what is written somewhere steht there.

  • Köln liegt am Rhein.Cologne is on the Rhine.
  • Das steht in der Zeitung. It says so in the newspaper.

Sitting down yourself

When you move into a position, use the putting verb with a reflexive pronoun (Reflexive verbs: sich freuen, sich waschen): Ich setze mich (I sit down), Ich lege mich ins Bett (I lie down in bed), Er stellt sich an die Tür (he goes and stands at the door).

In southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland people say ist gestanden, ist gelegen, ist gesessen. In northern and central Germany it's hat gestanden, hat gelegen, hat gesessen. Both are correct.

  • Ich habe die Flasche in den Kühlschrank gestanden. → gestellt.
