Two verbs for "to know"
- wissen: to know a fact or a piece of information: the answer, the time, where someone lives, that something is true.
- kennen: to know a person, place or thing, to be familiar with it: a city, a film, a song, someone's brother.
wissen is irregular
| wissen | kennen | |
|---|---|---|
| ich | weiß | kenne |
| du | weißt | kennst |
| er / sie / es | weiß | kennt |
| wir | wissen | kennen |
| ihr | wisst | kennt |
| sie / Sie | wissen | kennen |
Like the modals, ich weiß and er weiß have no ending.
- Ich weiß es nicht.I don't know.
- Weißt du, wo Jonas wohnt?Do you know where Jonas lives?
- Weiß Lena die Antwort?Does Lena know the answer?
- Das weiß ich schon.I already know that.
- Kennst du meinen Bruder?Do you know my brother?
- Wir kennen Hamburg sehr gut.We know Hamburg very well.
- Kennen Sie das Restaurant am Markt?Do you know the restaurant at the market?
- Ich kenne das Lied.I know the song.
A quick test
If know is followed by a question word or that (where, when, who, whether, that), use wissen: Ich weiß, dass …, Weißt du, wann …? With es, das or etwas standing for a fact, also use wissen. If it is followed by a person or a place, use kennen.
Common mistakes
Ich kenne, wo er wohnt.→ Ich weiß, wo er wohnt. Where he lives is a fact.Ich weiß Berlin.→ Ich kenne Berlin. A place takes kennen.Ich weißeorer weißt→ ich weiß, er weiß.- In Switzerland you'll see ich weiss, because Swiss spelling has no ß. In Germany and Austria, write weiß.
