Regular verbs in the present
wohnen, lernen, spielen, arbeiten: the stem and six endings
Part of the free A0 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.
Most German verbs follow one pattern. Take the infinitive (wohnen, to live), remove -en to get the stem (wohn-), and add the ending for each person.
| Person | Ending | wohnen | spielen | arbeiten | heißen |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | -e | wohne | spiele | arbeite | heiße |
| du | -st | wohnst | spielst | arbeitest | heißt |
| er, sie, es | -t | wohnt | spielt | arbeitet | heißt |
| wir | -en | wohnen | spielen | arbeiten | heißen |
| ihr | -t | wohnt | spielt | arbeitet | heißt |
| sie, Sie | -en | wohnen | spielen | arbeiten | heißen |
The wir, sie and Sie forms are always the same as the infinitive.
Two small adjustments
- Stem ends in -t or -d (arbeiten, finden), or in a consonant + m/n (öffnen): add an extra -e- so you can say it: du arbeitest, er arbeitet, ihr findet.
- Stem ends in -s, -ß, -z (heißen, tanzen): the du form only adds -t: du heißt, du tanzt.
One form, several meanings
German has no "do" and no "-ing" form. Ich spiele means I play, I'm playing and, with a time word, I'm going to play: Morgen spiele ich Tennis. Questions don't need do either: Spielst du Tennis? (Do you play tennis?)
- Ich wohne in Hamburg.I live in Hamburg.
- Du lernst schnell. You learn fast.
- Mein Sohn spielt Klavier. My son plays the piano.
- Wir kochen heute Abend. We're cooking tonight.
- Arbeitest du am Samstag?Do you work on Saturday?
- Er arbeitet in einer Bank.He works in a bank.
- Was macht ihr morgen? What are you doing tomorrow?
- Sie tanzt sehr gut.She dances very well.
Learn the pattern with one verb you use a lot, such as wohnen. Then lernen, spielen, kochen, machen, hören, kaufen, trinken all work the same way.
Common mistakes
Du arbeitst. After a stem in -t, add -e-: Du arbeitest.Du heißst.After ß, the du form only adds -t: Du heißt.Ich bin spielen. There is no "-ing" form: Ich spiele.Machst du spielen Tennis? No "do" in questions: Spielst du Tennis?Er wohnen in Bonn. With er, sie, es the ending is -t: Er wohnt in Bonn.
