Stem-changing verbs: sprechen, lesen, fahren

Some verbs change their vowel in the du and er/sie/es forms: du sprichst, er liest, sie fährt.

Regular endings, a different vowel

These verbs take the normal present-tense endings (Regular verbs in the present), but in the du and er / sie / es forms the vowel of the stem changes. All other forms are regular.

The common ones

  • e → i: sprechen (to speak), essen (to eat: du isst, er isst), geben (to give), helfen (to help), nehmen (to take: du nimmst, er nimmt), treffen (to meet: du triffst), vergessen (to forget).
  • e → ie: lesen (to read), sehen (to see), empfehlen (to recommend).
  • a → ä: fahren (to drive, to go), schlafen (to sleep), tragen (to carry, to wear), waschen (to wash), and laufen (to run: au → äu, du läufst).
  • Sprichst du Deutsch?Do you speak German?
  • Lena isst kein Fleisch.Lena doesn't eat meat.
  • Mein Vater liest jeden Abend die Zeitung. My father reads the newspaper every evening.
  • Siehst du das Schild? Can you see the sign?

  • Das Baby schläft schon. The baby is already asleep.
  • Nimmst du einen Kaffee? Will you have a coffee?
  • Wir fahren am Freitag nach Hamburg. We're going to Hamburg on Friday.

Dictionaries and vocab lists show the change: fahren (fährt). Learn the er-form with the verb and the du-form follows.

Spelling notes

When the stem ends in -s, -ß or -z, the du-form only adds -t: du liest, du isst, du vergisst.

Common mistakes

  • Er fahrt nach Köln. → Er fährt nach Köln. The a → ä change happens in the er-form.
  • Ich spriche. → Ich spreche. The ich form never changes its vowel.
  • Ihr fährt → Ihr fahrt. The ihr form is regular.
  • Du lest → Du liest. Lesen changes in the du form too.
  • Du nehmst → Du nimmst. Nehmen also doubles the m: nimmst, nimmt.
